Semester 1
ÂÈ150. Foreign Language (3). This 340-hour basic foreign language program is designed for undergraduate orientalists majoring in Regional Studies, as well as Oriental Studies. It is the first stage of studying English. The purpose of the course is to build reading, listening, speaking, and writing skills in students, as well as elementary skills in making business contacts.
ÔÔÊèÑ100. Physical Education (2). This course seeks to develop athletic abilities as well as character. The emphasis is placed on students acquiring personal experience, which will provide them with a creative utilizing of sports and fitness skills.
ÈÈÔ100. Russian History (2). This course offers an overview of the history of Russia from ancient time to the present based on both traditional and modern scientific concepts and alternative ones. A large body of factual evidence is given as well as information about celebrated historic personalities. The emphasis is on comparative analysis of Russia's historical development, with political, economic, social and cultural problems covered.

The topics addressed include the importance of information in modern society and methods of creating, transmitting, and storing information; libraries; information systematization; information technologies as applied to ways of finding information; utilizing scientific and educational information in university teaching strategies.
ÂÈ541. Vietnamese (12). In accordance with the national education standard, this program provides purposes, objectives, and methods of teaching the language as well as evaluation and assessment instruments to measure students' progress; the course states a body of knowledge and a number of skills in Vietnamese which students acquire during a five-year undergraduate program. The purpose of the course is to provide the student with a working knowledge of Vietnamese conversational, political, and literary vocabulary and to develop oral and written communication skills in Vietnamese.
ÈÎÑ643. Geography of Vietnam (2). The purpose of the course is to provide the student with a fundamental knowledge of the physical geography and economy of various Vietnamese regions as well as Vietnamese toponymics.
ÂÈ514. Introduction to Oriental Studies (1). The course focuses on the history of FENU and its current development; familiarizes the student with the educational process in university and institute settings. It forms ideas and views about oriental studies that are an integral part of Russian science. Topics also include periods of oriental studies development, the most important centers for oriental studies, and outstanding Russian orientalists.
ÈÐßË103. General Linguistics (2). It is an introductory survey course for students who have had no previous formal training in linguistics. The course provides linguistic knowledge for oriental language acquisition. The purpose of the course is to familiarize students with basic linguistic problems and terms, as well as to develop skills in analyzing language phenomena.
ÈÐßË104 Introduction to the Theory of Literature (2). It is an introduction to the basic concepts, rules, and conventions of the theory of literature, which helps participants to study the history of literature. Topics addressed are the relationship between literature and reality, basic regularities of literature development, and the inseparability of form and content in fiction.
ÂÈ508. English Morphology (2). This course is an important part of a theoretical base and practical training for prospective translators and/or interpreters of a foreign language. It seeks to present the student with an in-depth overview of traditional grammar concepts and to develop usage skills, thus providing a grammar background for using grammatical forms and constructions. Topics include theoretical foundations of word structure and word changing, ways of conveying grammatical meaning, parts of speech and word building, and standard grammatical form acquisition.

ÂÈ542. History of Vietnam for Language Majors (2). A history of Vietnam in ancient time and the Middle Ages course presents the student with a brief introduction to historical research, as well as the history of Vietnamese primitive and feudal societies, and the development of the Vietnamese society till the early modern period. The purpose of the course is to familiarize the student with basic historical concepts. Topics include problems of the introductory course to the history of Vietnam, Vietnamese history periods, the role and place of Vietnam in the world and regional historical processes, and archeological findings and the oldest written texts on ancient and medieval Vietnamese history. Emphasis is placed on the social, economic, and political history of the Vietnamese society and state from ancient time to the Middle Ages.
A course in the history of early modern Vietnam includes a brief introduction to early modern history as a whole and the history of the late feudal society in Vietnam in particular; topics addressed include problems of late feudalism and the early modern period; the role and place of early modern Vietnam in the world and regional historical processes; archeological findings and written texts on the history of early modern Vietnam. The course focuses on the social, economic, and political history of the Vietnamese society and state in the 18-19th centuries. A course in the modern history of Vietnam includes a brief introduction to modern history as a whole and the modern history of Vietnam. The course seeks to familiarize the student with the basic problems and events of the period; topics addressed include French colonization, Japanese occupation, and reasons for Vietnam's division into two separate states, the historical development of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam and Republic of South Vietnam, and topical problems of the modern history of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam. ÂÈ544 Ethnology in Vietnam (2). General and specific ethnological problems are described; the subject matter, methods, and rank of the discipline in the system of social sciences are considered. The student is presented with a working knowledge of basic scientific terms as well as social, matrimonial, and cultural realities. Topics include a detailed survey of ancient Vietnamese ethnic substrates; geographic factors in ancient Vietnamese ethnogeny; ethnocultural contacts; the aftermath of the Chinese invasion and European colonization; national arts, customs, and festivals.
ÂÈ515. Professional Interpreter's Ethics (2). The course presents the student with an overview of their future profession; describes interpretation as a means of communication; deals with the business and speech etiquette as well as verbal and non-verbal behavior of the Chinese, Japanese, Koreans and other peoples of PR countries.

ÂÈ850 Internship (6). Students are familiarized with FENU, the Institute of Oriental Studies and its Departments' libraries. During the internship, students are instructed in working on reference literature, rules and conventions of writing reference lists, and correct citation. Individual research paper is required by the end of this course.

Topics addressed include culture studies as an integrating area of knowledge; the phenomenon of culture; ideas, concepts, and approaches to culture study; culture types and forms; culture in different regions and time periods; Russia's culture in the world culture system.
ÂÈ153. Economics (4). Topics include fundamental concepts of market economy in theory and practice. The course is based on the data of Russian, Chinese, Japanese, and South Korean economies. Students are trained to solve problems and write tests on economics.
ÂÈ151. English-Speaking Countries Culture and Language Studies. The course is an important part of basic theoretical knowledge and practical training for future translators and/or interpreters and seeks to develop in students positive attitudes toward the language of study and native speakers. It is designed to familiarize students with the history, traditions and realities of English-speaking countries. The course provides solutions to a number of educating problems and serves as a linguistic foundation for both language teaching and translating. It trains students to fully understand shades of word meaning, analyze hints and allusions expressed by native speakers in speech discourse, and select relevant equivalents in the target language, taking into account the interlocutor's temper, character, and mood.

ÂÈ731. Introduction to Vietnamese Philology (2). This course is based on language and literary material of the Vietnamese language. It touches upon the peculiarity of the language situation in Vietnam in terms of the historical development of the Vietnamese society. The influence of Chinese and European cultures is also studied. The course explores national written language and script and their contributions to the development of Vietnamese literature and culture. Topics also include national linguistic tradition and the oldest lexicons; Vietnamese and foreign researchers' contributions to Vietnamese studies; Vietnamese studies in Russia; translators' activities and basic translations from Vietnamese into Russian vs. from Russian into Vietnamese.
ÂÈ737. History of Vietnamese Literature (3). This three-semester, three-part course includes the history of ancient, medieval, early modern, and modern Vietnamese literature. Topics addressed are Vietnamese literature origin and progress, traditional genres, outstanding Vietnamese writers and their creative work.
ÂÈ509 English Syntax (2). The course is an important part of basic theoretical knowledge and practical training for future translators and/or interpreters of a foreign language. It presents the student with an overview of traditional English syntax and helps to develop skills in using standard grammatical forms and constructions. The course is designed to provide the student with theoretical foundations of syntactical combinability in English, types of syntactical connection in the English sentence, syntactical functions of words and standard grammatical constructions for practical language acquisition.

Semester 5
ÈÈÔ102. Philosophy (3). The purpose of the course is to familiarize students with the foundations of philosophy, introducing such problems as world cognition, the history of philosophy, basic problems, principles, and categories. The course is designed to develop students' skills in reading philosophical texts as well as analyzing facts and social events.
ÞÈ100. Law (2). The course is designed to teach the essentials of theoretical law and Russia's legislative system to participants. The course develops skills in working on legal documents. The students will utilize their knowledge of law in their life and career.
ÂÈ154. History of Oriental Culture (2). This course will present participants with an in-depth overview of the cultures of India and China and their influence on the cultures of Japan and Korea. The course describes oriental traditions and cultural priorities. Religious and philosophical concepts are explained. Creative works and arts of oriental civilizations are studied.

ÂÈ545 Social and Political System of Vietnam (2). The course is designed for all Vietnamese majors. It includes an introduction concerned with the basic problems of political science, such as a state political system, a state regime, etc. Also, the state and political system of Vietnam is explored. The purpose of the course is to introduce students to basic political terms such as state, regime, political system, etc. The social and political system of the SRV is studied. Topics include the state emblem, anthem and flag of the SRV; political parties and public organizations in Vietnam; major trends in state establishment and political reforms of the 1990's.
ÂÈ546. History of Vietnamese Literature (2). Vietnamese literature from the 15th through 21st centuries is explored. The course introduces students to all aspects of Vietnam's social and cultural development in this period. Both literary trends and schools are studied. The most outstanding writers' creative works are considered.

ÂÈ750. Vietnamese Morphology (2). This theoretical course is designed for language majors of the Vietnamese Department. It includes the study of modern Vietnamese morphology. Morphemic analysis, parts of speech, and Vietnamese functional words are explored.
ÂÈ573. Religion Studies (2). A psychological approach is used to characterize religion. Topics include interaction between religion and historical types of religious practice, and an individual's religious experience as a specific type of reality. Emphasis is placed on Zen Buddhism and its place in the culture of Japan and Korea. Students are also introduced to the essentials of Christianity and Islam.
Semester 6
ÈÐßË100. The Russian Language and Russian Speech Etiquette (4). The purpose of the course is developing students' oral and written Russian communication skills. Students are instructed in writing scientific articles, delivering formal speeches, using language cliches of business and official documents, and standard Russian writing.

ÈÎÑ547. Vietnamese Economy (3). Topical problems of the Vietnamese economy are explored. Emphasis is on the historical overview of the Vietnamese economy and on the introduction of a market economy in the 1980-90's.
ÂÈ531 A Second Oriental Language (Chinese) (2). This five-semester course is designed for Vietnamese language majors and Thai language majors. The purpose of the course is to develop students' oral and written language comprehension, and skills in reading and dictionary-assisted translating Chinese texts. A knowledge of Chinese is utilized in the process of writing course papers concerned with the comparative analysis of Vietnamese, Chinese, and Thai.

Topics addressed include problems of human identity, personality formation, as well as factors and developmental mechanisms contributing to it; cognitive processes; emotions; talents, character, and temperament; principles of teaching, educating, and cultivating personality.

ÂÈ532. Theory and Practice of Translation (2). The course will present the student with an overview of the theory of translation and its place among linguistic disciplines. Topics include general trends in translation and interpretation from Russian into Vietnamese and vice versa. The course analyzes translating scientific and technical style; translating journalist style and fiction in Russia and abroad, including Vietnam. The best translations of classic fiction books are explored. Translations from Vietnamese into Russian, French, and Chinese as well as from Russian into Vietnamese are considered.

ÈÈß741. French Loanwords in Vietnamese (2). This specific course explores the French influence upon Vietnamese grammar and vocabulary in the period of French colonization.
ÂÈ742. Language Interference (2). The topics of this specific course include sub- and non-standard forms in Vietnamese resulting from long-term Chinese and French influences, and changes in Vietnamese speech patterns and grammatical constructions caused by introducing foreign elements to Vietnamese phonetics, morphology, and syntax.
ÂÈ752. Vietnamese Lexicology (2). Topics addressed include the system and structure of contemporary Vietnamese lexicology; the subject matter of lexicology; a word definition problem in Vietnamese; vocabulary origin and sources; loanwords in Vietnamese; phraseology; ways of extending and enlarging Vietnamese vocabulary nowadays; lexicography and dictionary classification.

Students utilize their knowledge in the process of writing course papers and diploma projects on the history of Vietnamese.

A detailed overview of Vietnamese literature and art including the period of struggling for independence from China and France is given. ÂÈ745. Chinese Loanwords in Vietnamese (2). This specific course is designed to explore words which were borrowed from Chinese and are named Chinese loanwords. The structure, function, and role of these words in Vietnamese are studied.
ÂÈ746. Vietnamese Folklore (1). The purpose of this specific course is to familiarize students with Vietnamese folklore from ancient times to the present. Topics include the development of folklore; ancient Vietnamese beliefs and religious rites; myths, legends, and traditional tales; folk songs; Vietnamese folk theater; traditional Vietnamese water puppet show; the origin and development of the folk musical drama.
Semester 10
ÂÈ155. A Specific Course in Information Science. The purpose of the course is to familiarize participants with (1) basic computer programs designed for hieroglyphic characters; (2) information portals and search engines capable of searching information in oriental languages; (3) Internet dictionaries.
ÂÈ738. Language Situation in Asian and South Asian Countries (2). The course is designed for Thai, Hindi, and Vietnamese language majors. Topics addressed include Thai, Hindi, and Vietnamese typology and genealogy; the number of native speakers according to various census data; language maintenance and policy in these countries. The course provides participants with a working knowledge of the linguistic geography of India, Vietnam, and Thailand as well as language maintenance and policy basic principles.
ÂÈ747. Information Conveying Ways in Isolating Languages (1). This specific course includes topics of information problems in a language; basic language units of conveying information in Indo-European languages, including such isolating languages as Chinese, Vietnamese, Thai, etc., in which a tonal syllable is of great importance. Its structure and phonological features are explored. Differences of tonal syllables in various languages are considered.
ÂÈ749. Han-Viet Elements in Vietnamese (1). This specific course explores Chinese hieroglyphs adaptation by Vietnamese phonological means which took place in the North Dependence period of Vietnam (1st century BC - 10th century AD). Reasons for transforming Han-Viet elements are studied. Emphasis is placed on Han-Viet semantics in modern Vietnamese. |
