The faculty also includes Japanese native speakers: Yamada, a member of Japanese Association for Promotion of Diplomatic Relations; Shoji Mikio; Tamura Aika; Kudo Hisaei, a graduate of FENU Hakodate branch, Japan; Yamada Mitsuko.

The department provides training in Japanese for language, economics, and regional studies majors. The period of study lasts five years for all students. This academic program aims to give students a profound knowledge of Japanese. Students have opportunities of practicing their oral and written communication skills in Japanese educational centers. Faculty members conduct research on the Japanese language and Japanese literature.
