The longest serving president of FENU during its 108 year history, he was elected to this position four times in chain (1990, 1997, 2002, and 2007) by secret ballot of the FENU Electoral Conference. Under his leadership, FENU became one of the few top layer Russian universities.

Dr. Kurilov initiated the FENU’s Innovative Educational Program, awarded with one of the largest federal grants in the history of Russian higher education. FENU’s project was rated 4th among 197 top Russian universities which took part in competition for awards of the «Innovative Universities» Grant Program within «Education» National Project. FENU won the 3rd largest grant of this competition, next to Moscow State University and St. Petersburg State University. Five research and educational centers in Natural Sciences have been opened at Far Eastern National University within this program.
