APRUNet "Distance Learning and the Internet" conference


President Kurilov announces that FENU will host the next APRUNet DLI conference

The fifth APRUNet "Distance Learning and the Internet" (DLI) conference was hosted by Tsinghua University in Beijing on October 11-13, 2004. It included many interesting presentations of leading worldwide universities, with topics related to IT, Internet, videoconferencing, biomedicine, and higher education. Far Eastern National University was the only Russian institution participating in this conference. Theses of all presentations are available at the conference's web site.

FENU presentation was focused on the University's international distance learning programs with the USA, Japan, and Australia. It also emphasized FENU interests and achievements in teaching Russian and Chinese, history and culture of Russia and People's Republic of China.

FENU delegation included Dr. Alexei G. Falaleev, Director of FENU Online Programs (speaker), Dr. Konkordia A. Kurilova, Director of the Regional Chinese Language Center, and Mr. Alexander N. Zubritskiy, Director of the Russian School for International Students.

FENU presentation included a demo of ongoing videoconference class in Human Law, organized jointly by FENU (Dr. Natalia Prisekina) and Seattle University Law School (Dr. Richard Lorenz). Over twenty American and five Russian students are enrolled in the class. For this demo, the first Russian-Chinese-American Polycom videoconference was organized between Vladivostok, Beijing, and Seattle (Far Eastern National University, Tsinghua University, and Seattle University).

FENU presentation also included a videoconference with FENU Russian School for International Students faculty members who shared their two-year experience in teaching Russian for Japanese students via Internet videoconferences. They answered many questions of APRUNet delegates.

One of the key events of the conference was the final video session with Dr. Vladimir I. Kurilov, FENU President, who announced hosting the next APRU DLI conference on October 4-7, 2005 by Far Eastern National University. Another speaker on FENU side was Dr. Qu Delin, President of Beijing Language and Culture University, visiting FENU for participation in Northeast Asian Forum of University Presidents (NAFUP), which took place the next day.
